10,000 tourists landed in Hong Kong via cruise ships this week

The Serenade of the Seas in Hong Kong for the first time.

The Serenade of the Seas visits Hong Kong for the first time with other three cruise ships bringing almost 10,000 visitors to the city from Wednesday this week.

The month of March is known as the traditional peak season for cruises, with 20 ships making 33 voyages to Hong Kong, bringing in 100,000 visitors.

Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung Yun-hung welcomed the Serenade of the Seas passengers at the Cruise Terminal on Wednesday morning. He confirmed the visitor's overall contentment with the transportation arrangements.

The spokesperson from the industry said that there is a recovery of 70 per cent in the number of cruise ships visiting the city to pre-pandemic levels.

It was explained that the specific mega-events organised during the peak period of cruise ship visits to the city would have more impact in attracting cruise ships to the city.

Kara Yeung Tsz-ching, the co-chief executive officer of the Hong Kong Cruise and Yacht Industry Association, said several cruise passengers indicated that they would only participate in mega-events if they happened to coincide with their travel plans in the city.

The industry noted that some passengers would book yacht tours upon arriving in Hong Kong to further explore the islands. It was then suggested that due to this fact, the government should leverage the unique strengths of the territory.
