Hongkongers have the chance to win prizes totaling HK$3 million in the second phase of the police's anti-scam lucky draw, which kicked off yesterday. This announcement followed an awards ceremony for winners from the first phase, where one lucky participant drove away in a BYD electric car valued at HK$209,000.
Commissioner Raymond Siu Chak-yee announced that the second phase will feature an even larger array of prizes. "I encourage people to utilize the anti-scam tools and verify information authenticity rather than rushing through the process," he stated.
The lucky draw, which began on October 1, is split into two phases. To enter, participants must download the police's anti-scam mobile application, Scameter. By completing various tasks within the app, users can earn multiple entries.
The second phase will continue until November 30 and offers a total of 40,000 prizes worth over HK$3 million. The grand prize includes a BYD Seal electric car worth approximately HK$270,000, alongside other rewards such as HK$50,000 in cash for HSBC credit card holders and round-trip economy class tickets for two to any Asian city on Cathay Pacific.
Participants can instantly check their results on the draw page, with the top prize winner to be announced on December 14.
The response to the lucky draw has been overwhelming, with over 750,000 downloads of the app recorded as of yesterday, and around 680,000 citizens actively participating. Superintendent Baron Chan Shun-ching from the cybersecurity and technology crime bureau noted a remarkable increase of 170,000 app downloads since the draw's inception.
He also cautioned the public about deceptive pop-ups claiming computer infections, advising against calling the provided technical support numbers. "Scammers often impersonate technical support staff, leading individuals to download software that grants remote access to their devices, risking theft of sensitive information, especially banking details," he warned.
This year, police have already logged 56 cases of such scams, resulting in losses of HK$53 million, with the largest single incident totaling HK$10 million. In the first nine months of the year, Hong Kong has experienced over 32,000 scams, marking an 8 percent increase.
