The 26-year-old police officer, Lai Pak-hung was sentenced to seven months and two weeks in jail as he pleaded guilty to stealing a backpack on a Citybus route N969 last November at off-duty hours. He has been therefore suspended from the police service.
It was reported that the backpack contained HK$27,000 worth of valuables items including three Octopus cards which contained about HK$900, an AirPods Pro charger, an identity card, a wallet, four credit cards, an iPad Air with an attached keyboard, a Nintendo Switch video
console and a box of face masks.
The officers assigned to arrest him could only find the iPad keyboard, one Octopus card and 22 face masks at Lai’s home. It was reported that he had allegedly spent HK$780 from the total balance in the three Octopus cards while the backpack was abandoned in the bushes of a building.
Lai Pak-hung pleaded guilty to five counts of theft appearing before deputy magistrate Tobias Cheng Yun-Chung in Tuen Mun Court yesterday. He was charged with stealing on a Citybus route N969 outside Tuen Mun Town Plaza on the 26th of November last year.
Magistrate Cheng thereafter ordered him to pay the victim HK$19,000 as compensation because up to HK$19,000 of valuables stolen from the victim could not be recovered.
