A quick power outage occurred in Hong Kong Island East yesterday, lasting nearly five minutes, causing residents to question whether the maintenance measures of Hong Kong Electric Company (HK Electric) were adequate.
HK Electric attributed the outage to a faulty high-voltage cable, which disrupted power supply for one minute. At present, the company has restored normal power supply and launched an investigation into the cause of the failure. It also apologized to affected customers.
It was reported after residents in Taikoo Shing complained about a five-minute power outage around 1pm today. Concerned citizens sought clarification from HK Electric and were informed of a high-voltage cable fault, which they believed was affecting the wider area of Island East beyond Taikoo Shing. In addition, residents expressed dissatisfaction with frequent power outages and questioned whether HK Electric's maintenance measures were adequate.
In response to inquiries, HK Electric said that at around 1:03 pm yesterday, an 11-kilowatt high-voltage cable failed, causing a temporary interruption in power supply to some customers in the Eastern District. The company quickly dispatched an emergency repair team and restored normal power supply by 1:04 p.m. HK Electric has launched an investigation to determine the root cause of the cable failure and apologizes to affected customers for the inconvenience caused.
