A statement has been made on Tuesday by Professor Jo Woog-yeon, of Kookmin University South Korean University, dismissed claims by a leading human rights group, Amnesty International.
It was announced earlier that a Uygur student taught by him could not be found after travelling to Hong Kong on the 10th of May. But he said that the man told him in a recent phone conversation that he was in Seoul. Professor Jo said that the 38-year-old Abuduwaili Abudureheman had neither travelled to Hong Kong nor left South Korea. He made a clear statement that he guaranteed that the man is in Seoul alive and well.
The professor stated further that, his student was flabbergasted when he let him aware of the news. Mr Abuduwaili told him that he is in South Korea throughout this year and never travelled to Hong Kong. Professor Jo even said to make an additional confirmation by calling on video, where his student turned the phone camera to affirm the South Korean environment.
Amnesty claimed Abuduwaili was on a Chinese government “watch list” of Uygurs and other Muslims from the Xinjiang region, because of his history of overseas travel.
Hong Kong authorities have denounced human rights groups earlier. They said it was a baseless claim by the group that the student could not be found after arriving at the airport last Wednesday and insisted the man had neither entered nor been refused entry into Hong Kong.
The Chinese government has been accused by Western politicians and groups such as Amnesty of human rights abuses in the far western region of Xinjiang, claims it has repeatedly rejected as “slanderous”.
