According to reports, a 35-year-old Pakistani volunteer is facing allegations of slapping a young boy multiple times for failing to recite the Quran. The incident is said to have occurred in August of last year at the Madrassa Taleemul Furqan Islamic Union in Quarry Bay. The defendant, Shahzad Khan, pleaded not guilty to the charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm during a court appearance at Eastern Court on Thursday.
It is claimed that Khan slapped the 13-year-old boy, identified as "X," five times, causing his glasses to fall off and resulting in injuries to his left eye. The boy reportedly experienced floaters and a retinal detachment as a result. The prosecution has stated that they will present six witnesses and submit a medical report on behalf of the victim. In contrast, the defense has indicated that they will not call any witnesses and have argued that Khan had no physical contact with the child.
The trial is set to take place over three days and will be conducted in English with interpretation arrangements. It has been confirmed that the boy, X, will provide testimony via video conferencing. Khan is currently out on bail.
