Kowloon City Magistrates' Court has sentenced a former policewoman to 3 months in jail coupled with 1 year of probabtion today.
Irene Lau Kit-yee was found guilty of stealing a hat which price was estimated to be over HK$5600 at a boutique in Tsim Sha Shui, on the 21st of May, 2022, according to the reports.
While passing the jugdement, Irene spoke on her condition of being under the influence of drugs prescription for stealing but the magistrate Kestrel Lam Tsz-hong turned down her explaination. He said "surveillance footage had seen no abnormality from the defendant and that her actions were premeditated to a certain extent. Imposing a fine could not reflect the seriousness of the offense".
The magistrate, however said that putting into thought of the defendant's state of mental health that required treatment and in which given an immediate custodial sentence could worsen her mental state. Then, he decided to lower the jail term to three-month with one year of probation.
The ex-police woman is 50 years and was in police service for over 30 years. Irene Lau Kit-yee was suspended from the service after her arrest. And she consequently made a resignation after the incident.
