An Indonesian man who illegally entered Singapore on a float was caught, whipped and jailed

SINGAPORE: An Indonesian man who had been charged several times for committing immigration offences and banned from travelling into Singapore was arrested after illegal entry again. And this time, he allegedly swims from Malaysia with a trash bag he creatively used to float on water, reported CNA
The man named Muhammad Izal, 34 was said to be arrested in Singapore and sentenced on Thursday(2nd of November, 2023) to 15 months imprisonment and whipped with 7 strokes of the cane.
He pleaded guilty to one charge each of entering Singapore without a valid document and without permission to enter after being deported from Singapore in May 2022.
According to court hearings, the Indonesian man had been charged in Singapore for immigration offences on four previous occasions. The last time he was charged happened to be in August 2021 for a similar immigration offence.
He was convicted in September 2022, sentenced to one year imprisonment and whipped with six strokes of the cane. He was then deported to his homeland on the 28th of May 2022 after serving a jail sentence with a written notice of a ban from entering the city in the future.
The written statement said permission would be needed from the immigration controller before entry or residing in the city in the future and failure to follow the instructions will land him in 3 years in jail upon conviction.
Surprisingly, Izal found his way back to Singapore illegally again after nearly 7 months of staying in his home country.
According to the court hearing, he boarded a ferry from Batam, Indonesia to Stulang Laut in Johor Bahru, Malaysia where he spent two nights before heading to the seaside to swim towards, Pulau Ubin in Singapore using what is called an inflatable floating device.
However, he was caught and arrested again after staying illegally for 10 months
In mitigation, he told the court he had children and sick parents. Then, he apologised.
