At least 10 people, including children have been killed following multiple rockets that hit a village in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights Saturday, the deadliest since the October 7 attack on Israel by the Hamas militants, according to the Israeli authorities.
The emergency service, Magen David Adom, said that 19 people had also been wounded, some of them seriously, in the Golan town of Majdal Shams.
Idan Avshalom, a senior medic from Magen David Adom, said the ages of those killed or wounded ranged from 10 and 20 years old, and an Israeli military spokesman said they were playing soccer at the time.
Idan Avshalom, said “We arrived at a soccer field and saw destruction and objects on fire. Injured people were lying on the grass and the sights were dire. We immediately began triaging the injured, some of the injured were sent to local clinics and our teams were also directed to the clinics. During the incident, there were additional alerts and the medical treatment of the injured is still ongoing.”
While Israel has been fighting a war with Hamas in the south, in Gaza, for almost 10 months, it has also traded fire on a second front, in the north, with the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah. However, Hezbollah denied responsibility for the attack on Saturday.
The Israeli military said that its assessment on the ground and intelligence showed that Hezbollah had launched the rocket.
The Iran-backed Palestinian group Hamas has occasionally attacked Israel from Lebanese soil since it launched the Oct. 7 assault on southern Israel that set off the war in Gaza. But Israel and Lebanon have so far carefully avoided escalating the situation on the northern front, even though one deadly miscalculation risks igniting a broader war.
Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the lead spokesman for the Israeli military, called the strike “a brutal attack” and vowed that Israel would prepare a response against Hezbollah.
“We will act to restore full security on our northern border,” he said at a news conference.
In a Facebook post, the Majdal Shams local council said “a dark day” had befallen the village and called on people to stay in their homes.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been updated on the situation. He was holding an emergency security meeting after the attack, according to a statement from his office. He was still in the United States, where he had been for the past few days for meetings with President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump.
