Residents of Fairview Park in Yuen Long will soon experience driverless buses as two autonomous light buses start a seven-month trial run on a 2.5km loop road within the housing estate. The trial is set to begin at the end of this month.

The autonomous driving system powering these shuttles has been under development and testing for the past two years, including road tests in mainland China to ensure initial vehicle safety and reliability. Before the trial run in Fairview Park, the system underwent additional testing and adjustments for about six to seven months, and the two autonomous buses had to pass inspection by the Transport Department.
The autonomous vehicles are equipped with 15 recognition cameras and radars to gather real-time data about their surroundings. The AI system will analyze road conditions and achieve precise positioning, while 5G-enabled smart lampposts will monitor the vehicles' condition in real-time.
According to the Transport Department, during the trial they will "limit the testing speed and testing routes as well as verify the qualifications of the backup operator." This trial is part of the government's efforts to provide more flexibility for the industry to conduct autonomous vehicle trials, following new legislation implemented in March.
The Fairview Park trial is one of eight autonomous vehicle trials currently underway across Hong Kong, as the city continues to explore the potential of this emerging transportation technology.
