Biden's Son Convicted on All Charges in Gun Case

A jury has found Hunter Biden, the son of U.S. President Joe Biden, guilty on all three felony counts related to his 2018 purchase of a handgun while addicted to crack cocaine. This marks the first criminal prosecution of the child of a sitting U.S. president.

The 54-year-old Biden was convicted after a one-week trial in Wilmington, Delaware, the Biden family's hometown. The 12-member jury deliberated for about three hours over two days before reaching the verdict.

Biden did not take the stand during the trial, which was attended by First Lady Jill Biden on several days. He could face up to 25 years in prison, though as a first-time offender, jail time is considered unlikely.

In a statement, President Biden expressed his "love and support" for his son, saying "I will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal."

Special counsel David Weiss, who brought the case against Hunter Biden, said "No one in this country is above the law. Everyone must be accountable for their actions, even this defendant." Weiss emphasized that the case was "not just about addiction" but about Biden's illegal choices while struggling with drug abuse.

The conviction adds to the legal troubles facing the Biden family, coming less than two weeks after the conviction of former President Donald Trump on business fraud charges. Hunter Biden also faces separate tax evasion charges in California.

These proceedings have complicated Democrats' efforts to keep the focus of the upcoming presidential election on Trump, Biden's likely Republican opponent. Trump's campaign has referenced the unsubstantiated allegations of corruption against the Biden family in reaction to Hunter's conviction.

The White House has stated there will be no presidential pardon for Hunter Biden.
