China and South Africa made power agreements at the BRICS summit

South African government is seizing the opportunity of the recent BRICS summit in its country to sign a raft of deals with China on Wednesday. The agreement will help South Africa to fix up its old-fashioned energy sector, which will extend to nuclear power plants to reduce the tense energy crisis.

The existing agreement with   Chinese power companies aside Brics summit in South Africa includes upgrades to the southern African country's electricity transmission and distribution networks.

The Minister for Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said "We are moving at the velocity of the fastest, we are not going to move to at the speed of the slowest," after signing the deals.

He added that "China's power transmission grid web, generation capacity and renewable energy plants are the largest in the world and were set up in a short time and it is this expertise and  South African Americans wanted to learn from this".

It was stated that South Africa's state utility Eskom has a power supply shortfall of around 4,000 megawatts (MW), accounting for a tenth of its installed capacity and resulting in record power cuts.

Its transmission capacity is highly constrained, disallowing any other power sources from coming online. The distribution of most of their capacity often burns out leading to long hours without power.

However, "China will help to extend the life of Eskom's coal-fired power plants, offer technology to cut emissions at a lower cost than available elsewhere globally and China might also set up transformer and solar PV panel manufacturing facilities in the country", the minister said. It will also help South Africa upgrade its nuclear power plant, he added.

South African president, Cyril Ramaphosa said on Tuesday that China will supply emergency power equipment worth 167 million rands (US$ 8.9 million) and grant around 500 million rands for their power sector, without giving timelines.
