China frightens Taipei with more trade sanctions as its election draws closer

China says Taipei violated a trade agreement between the two sides signed in 2010.

BEIJING - The Chinese government made on Wednesday, a threatened move to place additional trade sanctions on Taiwan if the ruling party “stubbornly” persist in supporting Taiwan independence. This is a fresh escalation towards Taiwan presidential and parliamentary elections that are coming up on January 13th, 2024.

China sees Taiwan as its territory and has sought to force Taiwan to accept Chinese sovereignty claims.

However, Taiwan earlier this month accused China of economic coercion and election interference after Beijing took the action of stopping the tariff cuts on some chemical imports from the island. China said Taiwan breached a trade agreement signed between them in 2010.

The spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, Mr Chen Binhua said on a Beijing news briefing that the “root cause” of resolving problems related to the 2010 deal was Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) adherence to the island’s formal independence.

“If the DPP authorities are determined to persevere, continue to stubbornly adhere to their Taiwan independence position, and refuse to repent, we support the relevant departments taking further measures in accordance with the regulations,” Mr Chen added.

China detests both the DPP and its presidential candidate, current vice-president Lai Ching-te, who is leading in the polls, believing they are separatists.

Mr Lai says he has no plans to change the island’s formal name, the Republic of China, but that only Taiwan’s people can decide their future. He has also repeatedly offered talks with China but has been rebuffed.

The defeated republican government fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing a civil war to Mao Zedong’s communists who founded the People’s Republic of China.

Mr Chen said Taiwan was “facing a crossroads” about where to go, and that anything can be discussed based on opposing Taiwan’s independence. He reiterated that Taiwan's independence means war.

賴先生表示，他沒有計劃改變台灣的正式名稱“中華民國”，但只有台灣人民才能決定他們的未來。 他也多次提出與中國進行會談，但都遭到拒絕。

1949年，在內戰中輸給建立中華人民共和國的毛澤東共產黨後，戰敗的民國政府逃往台灣。
