The Bangladesh consul-general had said that, a total of 300 domestic helpers have finished their training and set to work in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong government has deemed it fit to look for more alternatives after the announcement of Indonesian authorities to inflate the hiring expenses of domestic helpers to the city.

The Indonesian consul-general said in a media interview on Wednesday that there are presently 750 Bangladesh domestic helpers in the city while fresh 300 are just finished with domestic helper training and are set to start the work.

She later revealed her requests from the government. “Whether any trainer from Hong Kong can go to Bangladesh to train the domestic helpers in the training centres, especially the Cantonese language. And maybe our trainers can come here (Hong Kong)", she said.

“This is the kind of cooperation we sought, and the Labour Department assured us of full cooperation from their side,” Ara said.

The interviewer mentioned the question of the high fees of hiring a Bangladesh domestic helper which presently ranges from HK$ 8,000 to HK$10,000,  if it could be reduced to attract Hong Kong employers. She said it is not in her position to comment on the matter as it is the agency’s affairs.

“The number of agencies working in Hong Kong is about 3,000 and we are working with like 30 to 35 agencies. You can understand there is a big gap here,” she also said.

Concerning the number of Bangladesh helpers taking up a smaller portion of all helpers in the city, it was asked. She replied that the issue depends on employers’  choices.

"If the demand is not there, if the employers are not choosing domestic helpers from Bangladesh, they definitely cannot come here. You can understand that the decisions lie on the preference of the employers.”

"I attended a follow-up meeting and believed the government’s attitude was positive", she said.

She suggested that the government should provide a particular quota for  Bangladesh domestic helpers to boost their chances of working in Hong Kong.
