MANILA - The death toll from a 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the southern Philippine province of Surigao on Saturday has risen to three, government officials said. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported one fatality in the northeastern region of Mindanao and two in the southeastern region of the island.
The agency also said 48 people were injured in the offshore earthquake. The earthquake had a major impact on nearly 530,000 residents in three regions.
On Saturday night, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake occurred with a focal depth of 25 kilometers and was located about 30 kilometers northeast of Hinatuan town in Surigao del Sur province.
More than 3,330 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial quake, dozens of them exceeding magnitude five or six. Strong aftershocks continue to occur in the area, causing further concern.
The Philippines is an archipelagic nation prone to frequent seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an area known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
Just last month, a marine earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale occurred about 34 kilometers northwest of Sarangani town, with a focal depth of 72 kilometers. The earthquake killed at least nine people, according to Philippine authorities.
The authorities remain vigilant and closely monitor the situation in the affected areas. Efforts are underway to provide aid and support to affected residents, including medical assistance and relief supplies.
