Declaration of no criminal conviction will be required for work and student visas in Hong Kong

Hong Kong Immigration Department made the announcement today that, starting from the 19th of June, the application policies for entry visas or permits for dependants, foreign domestic helpers, imported workers, students, training and working holiday will be adjusted. The applicants will be required to declare whether they have been convicted for any criminal offences in the past.

However, the application policies for the extension of stay, and for foreign domestic helpers presently working in Hong Kong who will thereafter apply for contract renewal with the same employer or for completing the remaining/extended period of the current contract with the same employer and for change of employer in Hong Kong, will not be included in the modification, according to the department.

The department said further that, those applications that will reach its office on or before the 18th of June would still be processed without regard to a declaration of criminal convictions record from the applicants.

The adjustment in the policy is said to come up after a controversial mainland scientist named He Jiankui, who was once jailed in China for diting a baby's gene had his top talent visa to Hong Kong revoked in February on suspicion of making false statements.
