A car crashed into the Chinese Consulate building in San Francisco late Monday, killing the driver, and witnesses said they heard a man yell "Where is the Chinese Communist Party?" as he emerged from the building.
San Francisco police earlier confirmed that one or more officers fired their weapons at the scene of the accident, while the fire department said the driver had been taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
Fox News reports early in the incident said the driver was shot.
A witness interviewed by local newspaper the San Francisco Standard said the man drove a blue Honda into the consulate building and shouted "China's ruling Communist Party" as he got out.
The San Francisco consulate was previously attacked in 2014, when a gangster poured two barrels of gasoline on the facade of the building and set it on fire. The consulate had lodged representations with the US side at that time.
Police earlier issued a warning on social media asking people to avoid Laguna Street and Geary Avenue because of the ongoing police activity.
There was a heavy police presence in the area and the Honda could be seen ramming into the consulate's visa section. The front of the building was also cordoned off.
It is understood that the incident occurred as China and the United States were planning to hold a leadership summit in the city.
San Francisco is set to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit next month, and there are growing hopes that Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend and meet U.S. President Joe Biden on the sidelines.
Biden said on Friday that a one-on-one meeting with Xi Jinping at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit was possible.
