An ex-customs officer was sentenced to nine weeks imprisonment at Eastern Court on Wednesday(18th of October, 2023) for stealing a colleague’s HK$700.
Wu Leong-ho, the defendant, pleaded guilty to two counts of theft and one of attempted theft.
The defendant was charged with stealing HK$500 and HK$200 on different occasions from the locker of his colleague surnamed Choi. The crime was committed at the workplace in Super Terminal One, Chek Lap Kok on the 29th of November and the 7th of December.
He attempted to steal again from Choi's on December 23, according to the statement.
In mitigation, the defence said Wu had a financial problem and he needed to pay some bills including his mother's upkeep and maintenance work on the family’s house.
The defence said further that Wu borrowed money from a loan company and committed the crime out of pressure. He said Wu had never been convicted of a crime before.
Magistrate Jeffrey Sze Cho-yiu emphasized how serious the crime that Wu committed while still an officer of a disciplinary service. He said that Wu's way of unlocking his colleague's locker when there was nobody showed his plans and skills.
The Magistrate finally sentenced Wu to nine weeks in jail saying the court has to pass the punishment with a deterrent.
前海關關員竊盜港幣700元被判入獄九週
一名前海關人員因盜竊同事的港幣700元，週三（2023年10月18日）在東區法院被判處監禁九週。
被告吳良浩承認兩項竊盜罪和一項竊盜未遂罪。
被告被控在不同場合從同事蔡姓的置物櫃偷取港幣500元及港幣200元。 案件於11月29日及12月7日在赤鱲角超級一號客運大樓的工作地點犯案。
聲明稱，12 月 23 日，他再次試圖從 Choi 家偷竊。
作為緩解，辯方稱吳有經濟問題，他需要支付一些帳單，包括他母親對家裡房屋的維護和保養工作。
辯方進一步稱，吳某向貸款公司借錢，迫於壓力實施犯罪。 他說吳以前從未被定罪。
裁判官施祖耀強調，吳在擔任紀律部隊期間所犯的罪行有多嚴重。 他說，吳在無人的情況下打開同事的儲物櫃的方式顯示了他的計劃和技巧。
法官最終判處吳九週監禁，稱法院必須通過具有威懾力的處罰。
