HONG KONG - An explosion occurred during a construction project at the New Sun To Yuen Restaurant on Lau Fau Shan Street at around 9am today, injuring three male workers.
Police rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the incident. Preliminary investigations revealed that the explosion was caused by workers accidentally damaging underground cables while digging. The injured worker was immediately sent to the hospital for treatment.
According to eyewitnesses, workers from a subcontracted company owned by CLP Power were repairing drain covers when the incident occurred. The police are currently investigating the cause of the accident, which has been classified as an industrial accident.
Affected by the accident, areas including Lau Fau Shan Street were temporarily without power. The injured workers, aged 64 and 57, suffered burns to their face, hands and hair. They were sent to Tuen Mun Hospital and Tin Shui Wai Hospital for medical treatment.
Mr. Tang, the affairs director of the Lau Fau Shan Chamber of Commerce, explained that the project involves replacing the drain covers that have been used for many years and have become worn. The project has been ongoing for months and stretches from the end of the street to the site of the incident. After the accident, 17 companies suffered power outages. Affected merchants have temporarily moved seafood products to unaffected stores. CLP Power and other relevant departments responded quickly and assured Mr. Tang that they would send two teams to carry out emergency repairs and the power supply would be restored within about 40 minutes.
Some affected store owners reported that the incident occurred before their stores opened for business. They described hearing a loud bang and witnessing a huge fireball. The exact timetable for restoring power remains uncertain.
