In a tragic incident that occurred early Friday morning, a fire broke out in a flat located in Tung Chung, resulting in the death of four cats and the hospitalization of three women. The blaze, which caused over 100 residents to be evacuated, was believed to have been caused by a rice cooker catching fire.
The flat, situated at Yu Ying House in Yu Tai Court, became engulfed in flames at approximately 6:30 am. Firefighters swiftly responded to the scene and deployed a breathing apparatus team along with a water jet to extinguish the fire. After approximately 40 minutes, the fire was successfully put out.
One of the occupants, a 58-year-old woman surnamed Sun, suffered severe burns to her face, right shoulder, and ears. She was immediately transported to Princess Margaret Hospital for medical treatment. Additionally, two other women, aged 65 and 80, respectively, identified as Ng and Wong, felt unwell due to smoke inhalation and were taken to North Lantau Hospital for further evaluation.
During the rescue operation, firefighters managed to save four cats from the building. Unfortunately, one of the cats was found lifeless. Despite administering first aid to the remaining three cats, their injuries proved to be fatal as well.
The incident has prompted an outpouring of concern and condolences from the local community. Authorities are conducting investigations to determine the exact cause of the fire.
