Hong Kong authorities will selectively slaughter 32 pigs that have been exposed to an outbreak of African swine fever at a farm in Yuen Long.
On Tuesday, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) reported that the 32 samples obtained from the pig farm at the Lau Fau Shan revealed that half of the animals were infected with the virus.
The spokesperson for the department said “The AFCD has immediately suspended transport of any pigs from the farm concerned until further notice, according to the contingency plan on ASF [African swine fever]. "
“The AFCD will arrange culling pigs on the farm concerned for the sake of prudence.”
However, the public was told not to be worried because the virus would not infect humans and no food safety risk is created from it.
It was added that the outbreak did not affect the normal performance of local slaughterhouses or the overall supply of live pigs.
The department said efforts have been made to inform all local pig farmers especially the three farms that are within 3 kilometres of the outbreak and they have been inspected with no abnormalities found.
