A middle-aged Hong Kong man has been jailed for eight years after drugging, raping and impregnating his 23-year-old maid and then trying to bribe her for HK$2,000 ($256).
Lee Pui-Hong, a 60-year-old, told the High Court he deeply regretted his "impulsive" actions two years ago, which cost him his family and career.
But Deputy Judge Eric Kwok Tung-Ming said on Friday the crime was premeditated, and questioned how Lee's financial issues led him to attack the Indonesian worker.
"The defendant's remorse was just talk and no action," Kwok said during the sentencing. "The evidence in this case is overwhelming. Pleading guilty is the only sensible thing to do."
According to report, the helper started working for the Lee family in July 2021, and after the defendant's two daughters moved out, he lived with the Lee family in a tenement house in Cheung Sha Wan and lived peacefully.
On November 21 of the same year, the then 23-year-old helper fell unconscious in the kitchen of the apartment after Lee made her eat a bowl of turtle shell jelly mixed with sedatives. Lee raped the maid in her room while she was dizzy.
The employer later apologized and gave the victim four HK$500 bills in the hope that she would not speak out about her ordeal for 30 minutes. The helper recalled that she threw the money away twice, only for Lee to stuff it back into his pocket. The exhausted helper fell asleep and reported the incident to the police the next day.
"I did have sex with her, but then I gave her HK$2,000," Lee told police shortly after his arrest.
He insisted in subsequent interviews that the sex was consensual, adding that he threw away the shirt he was wearing because he feared aides would frame him.
Two weeks later, the woman was confirmed to be pregnant and suffered a miscarriage in January last year. DNA examination of the embryo concluded it was Lee's child.
Defence lawyers said Lee had closed his business and sold his apartment in Cheung Sha Wan since he was charged. He also transferred all proceeds from the sale of the apartment to his ex-wife as part of the divorce settlement, the court heard.
Kwok called the case "very serious" and emphasized that the helper suffered psychological trauma and is still in a state of severe anxiety.
He sentenced Lee to eight months to six years in prison for each offence, and then sentenced him to eight years in total.

他对李在镕每项罪行判处八个月至六年监禁，然后总共判处他八年徒刑。
