A couple of days after Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-Chiu announced the end of the mask mandate, AfriHKa news correspondents were in different areas of Hong Kong to see the responses of the people towards this latest development.

Most people in the city are still having their faces covered with masks even in the parks where fresh and cleaner air could be abundant and advantageous. Surprisingly, the mask mandate imposed for almost three years has become Hong Kong people's practice.

In contrast to the other parts of the western world, where most people even failed to use face masks in public at the height of the Covid pandemic.
The functions of face masks cannot be overemphasised as part of the measures to reduce the risks of spreading the Coronavirus. But yet, a lot has been said by different healthcare specialists about the adverse effects of prolonged use of face masks. In other news, some locals welcome this gesture as they think this will bring more tourists to the city, in a bid to boost the economy.
