HK Observatory Forecasts Sudden Cold Snap with Midweek Urban Temperature Drop to 11°C

As the annual Standard Chartered Marathon approaches, Hong Kong is bracing itself for a sudden shift in weather conditions. The Hong Kong Observatory has issued a forecast indicating a significant drop in temperatures following the arrival of a cold front over the weekend, leading to a widespread chill across the region.

A powerful winter monsoon, coupled with a cold front sweeping across Southern China, is expected to trigger a dramatic weather change. The latest outlook from the Observatory suggests that temperatures will plummet within the next few days, with urban areas experiencing lows of just 11 degrees Celsius by next Wednesday. This sharp decline comes after a period of relatively mild temperatures, ranging between 19 to 24 degrees Celsius, which were experienced earlier during the Great Cold (Dàhán), a traditional Chinese solar term that occurred on January 20th.

The most noticeable temperature drop is predicted to occur on the day of the marathon, with forecasts indicating a decrease from the previous day's range to a brisk 15 degrees Celsius. This 9-degree decrease is expected to happen overnight, posing a chilly challenge for both participants and spectators.

The cold spell is attributed to a strong northeast monsoon, which is currently replenishing and will exert its influence over the coastal regions of Southern China in the coming days. The monsoon is predicted to bring particularly strong winds. However, as the week progresses, the monsoon is expected to ease, resulting in a slight increase in temperatures and providing a brief respite with warmer and more pleasant daytime weather in the Guangdong area.

Looking ahead, residents of Hong Kong can anticipate windy conditions and a slight cooldown in the next few days. Towards the end of the week, there will be a temporary period of warmth during the daytime. However, this respite will be short-lived as temperatures are set to significantly drop on Sunday, leading to a cold start to the following week.
