12th June 2025 – Hong Kong – Hong Kong Airlines has announced changes to its flight schedules due to rising concerns over the potential "Nankai Trough Mega Earthquake" in Japan. Following the suspension of flights to Sendai in June, the airline will now cancel services between Hong Kong and Kagoshima as well as Kumamoto in July and August. Additionally, flight frequencies to Nagoya will be reduced.

Passengers affected by these adjustments can rebook on alternative routes operated by the airline, including other Japanese destinations, mainland China, Taipei, Bangkok, and Hanoi. Those opting for refunds will receive compensation in the form of cash vouchers.

Travel platforms previously reported that Hong Kong Airlines would halt Kagoshima and Kumamoto flights starting July, with Nagoya services reduced to once weekly in July and August before a full suspension in September. Flight searches for these routes now display "No flights available" for the affected months.

The airline cited low ticket demand from Japanese travelers as a key factor in the decision. Despite earthquake fears, Hong Kong Airlines remains optimistic about summer travel demand from Hong Kong residents.

Affected passengers will receive assistance in rebooking or refunds, with the airline apologizing for any inconvenience. Hong Kong Airlines also plans to expand its network, including a new Sydney route launching June 20 and increased frequencies to destinations such as Auckland, the Maldives, Bangkok, and several mainland Chinese cities.
