Hong Kong authorities have started a campaign to prevent the transmission of blood-sucking insects(bedbugs) which have been recently the source of public alarm in France, the UK and South Korea.
The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) officers have commenced giving passengers warning leaflets at the airport to educate them against the spread of bedbugs.
The Department said in a statement on Wednesday it had started giving out leaflets at the airport to visitors and local people to enhance their awareness about bedbug prevention and control.
FEHD has notified airlines and the Airport Authority to enhance hygiene to prevent bedbug menace in the city.
Irene Yeung, director of the FEHD, visited hotel representatives on Wednesday to advise on how to reduce the risk of bedbug transmission.
“Although information shows that bedbugs will not spread diseases, bedbug bites may cause skin allergy and itchiness and make people feel unwell…” a government spokesperson said. It was added in the statements that authorities will enhance communication with relevant business sectors.
Recently, South Korea has set aside 500 million won (US$338,000) to curb the bedbugs that have infested the city. 17 outbreaks have been reported in the capital of Seoul and the cities of Busan and Incheon as of 5 November, local media report.
In Hong Kong, no infestation has been reported until now but specialists warned about the possibility of transmission since bedbugs can spread through public transport a the luggage of the travellers.
