The Hong Kong Observatory has issued a forecast predicting rain in the city for the next 10 days, with the possibility of thunderstorms coinciding with the upcoming Easter weekend. According to the weather authority, the current Easterly airstream affecting the coast of Guangdong will gradually be replaced by a Southerly airstream. This, combined with a band of thundery showers over the northern part of southern China, will contribute to the rainy conditions.
In addition to upper-air disturbances, southern China can expect heavy showers and squally thunderstorms throughout the weekend and into early next week. However, the Observatory predicts that the weather will improve in the coastal areas of Guangdong by midweek next week as the upper-air disturbances diminish.
According to the nine-day weather forecast provided by the Observatory, Saturday will be mainly cloudy with a few showers, which will become more frequent later in the day along with isolated squally thunderstorms. Sunday will also be cloudy with showers and a few squally thunderstorms. Starting from Tuesday, the weather conditions will gradually improve with one or two showers throughout the day and sunny intervals. The temperature is expected to reach up to 30 degrees Celsius.
The Observatory has also issued a warning about unstable weather in the Greater Bay Area, urging holiday travelers to prepare for adverse weather conditions. The mainland's National Meteorological Center has forecasted an accumulated rainfall of 120 to 150 millimeters over the next 10 days until April 6 in central and northern parts of southern China. This represents 40 to 70 percent more rainfall than the normal average for the same period, and in some areas, it could be more than double the average amount.
The ECMWF Ensemble Prediction System has also indicated a higher chance of lightning in the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary on Saturday and Sunday, suggesting active convective weather in the region. Travelers planning to head north are advised to pay special attention to their travel plans and be prepared for possible sudden adverse weather.
As Hong Kong prepares for a rainy week ahead, it is important for residents and visitors to stay informed about the weather conditions and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and well-being.
