A 51-year-old man was apprehended on Sunday( 15th of October, 2023) by Hong Kong customs officials while passing via Hong Kong's airport. He was caught hiding 11kg of suspected cocaine worth HK$12 million in the cushions section of his electric-powered wheelchair.
The suspect was reported by the Customs and Excise Department to be calling himself a director of a car rental company and arrived in Hong Kong from the Caribbean territory of Sint Maarten via Paris. He used crutches while his wheelchair and another piece of belonging were checked in, Customs said.
Meanwhile, the cushion compartments of his wheelchair made for the seat and backrest were suspicious to the officers as if it was once refixed after being opened. The suspicion was followed by a thorough X-ray examination of the wheelchair.
Eventually, 11kg of suspected cocaine hidden in concealed compartments was found after a thorough examination by the officers.
The man told the Customs Officials that the wheelchair was given to him on loan by his friend to use during his journey.
The man was arrested on suspicion of trafficking a dangerous drug, an offence punishable by a maximum fine of HK$5 million and life imprisonment.
