Hong Kong Customs has recently issued a safety alert regarding the use of certain soother holders that pose potential risks of suffocation and strangulation. Test results have revealed that these specific models contain hazardous components, prompting the authorities to urge parents to immediately discontinue their use for the safety of young children. Additionally, traders have been advised to remove these products from their store shelves.
The Customs department took action upon receiving a referral from a concerned organization regarding the presence of unsafe soother holders in the market. In response, Customs officers conducted safety testing by purchasing two models from different retailers. The results of the tests indicated that the fasteners of these models extended beyond the base of the test guides, which simulate the oral cavity of young children, without incorporating any ventilation holes.
Moreover, one of the models had a detachable soother fastener that completely passed through another test guide representing the mouth size of infants, posing a suffocation risk if accidentally swallowed. The other model exceeded the maximum length limit specified in the safety standard's requirements for tensile testing, thereby posing a strangulation hazard. In addition, both models failed to comply with the identification markings, bilingual warnings, and cautions prescribed in the Toys and Children's Products Safety Ordinance (TCPSO). Furthermore, they lacked the necessary safety labeling, including warnings and instructions for use.
Following the discovery, Customs conducted operations and inspected the premises of retailers and wholesalers associated with the case. Fortunately, no suspected unsafe soother holders of the same models were found. Prohibition notices have been issued to prohibit the continued sale of the two models by the respective retailers and related wholesalers.
Investigations into this matter are currently ongoing, as authorities work diligently to ensure the safety of children and prevent the distribution of hazardous products in the market.
