The largest cocaine in 4 years was uncovered by Hong Kong customs officers on a building in Kwai Chung. The seized 230kg drugs worth HK$180 million (US$23 million).
Customs and Excise Department said on Wednesday that the venue was used as a major storage facility by a drug-trafficking ring.
The premise was situated under surveillance by customs after an earlier investigatory exercise that a consignment of drugs was transported to the unit in the middle of August, this year.
A driver of 53 years old was arrested as he was allegedly paid to convey the consignment to the premise but has been given bail until further investigation.
The source said an investigation indicated that this drug was meant to be distributed to the local underground market. He added authorities were looking into the source of the narcotic and its distribution network, with further arrests possible.
Superintendent Ip Kwok-leung of the bureau said the three significant hauls revealed “customs’ determination” and capability in combating drug-trafficking activities.
He said customs would continue to carry out intelligence-led operations to combat international drug trafficking at its source.
