August 5, 2024 - Hong Kong faced its hottest weather so far this year on Monday, with temperatures soaring well above previous records.
According to data from the Hong Kong Observatory, an anticyclone weather system over southern China led to extremely hot conditions across much of the city in the afternoon. Temperatures rose to 35 degrees Celsius or higher in most areas.
The highest temperature recorded by the weather authority was 35.4 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous 2024 high of 35 degrees set on July 7.
By noon, temperatures had reached around 34 degrees in most of Hong Kong, with areas like Sha Tin and Tuen Mun seeing mercury readings of 35 degrees. The hotspot was Sheung Shui, which hit 38 degrees Celsius by 2 PM and then peaked at 38.9 degrees around 3 PM.
The unseasonably high temperatures are expected to continue through the middle and latter part of this week, as the anticyclone system persists over southern China. However, the weather should become more unsettled by the weekend, with the anticyclone weakening and showers expected along the Guangdong coast.
The nine-day forecast calls for temperatures ranging from 28 to 34 degrees Celsius starting tomorrow, August 6, through next Sunday. Aside from a sunny period from Wednesday to Friday, showers are predicted most days, with the possibility of some thunderstorms on Tuesday morning.
This latest heat wave underscores the challenges Hong Kong faces from the impacts of climate change, with extreme temperatures becoming more common in recent years. Meteorologists will be closely monitoring the situation to provide the public with timely updates and advice on coping with the sweltering conditions.
