Filipinos in Hong Kong can look forward to a festive Christmas celebration on December 24th. The event, called "Paskong Pinoy sa Hong Kong at PaStaran 2023," will take place on Chater Road in Central and will feature various activities such as a variety show, games, a lantern-making contest, a midnight mass, and a "Paskong Salubong" or Christmas Day welcome.
The event is a collaboration between the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong. This gathering will be the first in four years due to previous cancellations caused by protests and the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, this year's celebration will coincide with OWWA's OFW Day, which will be led by the agency's administrator, Arnell Ignacio.
Originally planned for December 10th, the event was rescheduled due to the Hong Kong government's refusal to permit a public gathering on Chater Road that day, as it coincided with District Council elections. Despite the change in schedule, the event is expected to bring joy to many overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Hong Kong, as several community organizations will present songs, dances, and participate in games and contests.
The day's activities will commence with a thanksgiving mass, followed by parlor games, mass zumba dancing, and a parade. In the afternoon, speeches and Christmas messages will be delivered by outgoing Consul General Raly Tejada and other consulate officers. OWWA Administrator Ignacio will serve as the keynote speaker. The afternoon program will include a sing and dance competition, followed by a mass dance by around 500 OFWs.
In the evening, the winners of the PaStaran contest, a month-long lantern-making competition, will be announced. Filcom organizations were invited to showcase their creativity by creating traditional lanterns or "parol" using recycled materials. Prizes ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 will be awarded to the winners.
At 10:00 pm, the Misa de Aguinaldo, a Christmas Eve midnight mass, will be held, officiated by Fr. Jay Flandez, the Catholic Chaplain for Filipinos. The day's celebration will conclude with the "Paskong Salubong," a festive welcome to Christmas Day, which will take place at midnight.
