The government announced on Friday the closure of all-day school classes as a result of the heavy rainfall that has triggered serious flooding in most parts of the city and brought a serious traffic disturbance.

Hong Kong Observatory reported earlier that the tough low pressure associated with the remnant of Haikui has brought torrential rain to the coast of Guangdong since last night, the 7th of September. It was said that from 6 pm last night to midnight, more than 70mm of rainfall was recorded in most of the territory and even over 200mm were recorded in Kowloon, the Northeastern part of the new territories and the Hong Kong Island.

The Observatory headquarters said it recorded an hourly rainfall of over 158 millimetres between 11 p.m. on Thursday and midnight, the highest since records began in 1884.

Therefore, the government has appealed to employers to observe work arrangements under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 8 and apply it for the safety of employees and the feasibility of travelling from home to their place of work, adopting a sympathetic and flexible work arrangement.

It was said that the extreme conditions would last at least until noon and would continue to intently monitor the latest weather, road and public transport service conditions and report the end of extreme conditions on time.

The general public should pay attention to the latest news advisories, authorities said.
