Hong Kong Railways Corporation majorly known as MTR will be increasing the fares by 2.3 per cent. The last fare increment was made in 2019 by 3.3 per cent and there was a fare cut in the 2021 financial year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The current rise was said to be prompted by the corporation overhaul fare adjustment formula that was mostly as a result of inflation that rose 2 per cent for the year and workers' wages that jump 3.6 per cent last December based on government recent data released.
The fare rise means 90 per cent of people boarding the train will have to pay an extra 40 HK cents per trip at most.
In 2022, the MTR Corporation made a total profit of HK$9.8 billion which is up 2.9 per cent from the previous year as posted.
However, MTR Corporation is making the new arrangement of increasing the maximum contribution it makes to a fare concession fund from HK$25 million to HK$40 million for each service disarrangement. More charges will be incurred if the disarrangement comes up during peak hours, or lasts more than three hours. Also, a new arrangement for compensating passengers for that disarrangement will come into force.
There will be a 50 per cent deduction in ticket fares over four weekend days compared to the previous 3 per cent fare discount for each trip over a certain period. The next weekend rounds will be held in April and May.
