Hong Kong Observatory says Typhoon Signal no. 3 stays until 6a.m on Sunday

The Observatory says the Strong Wind Signal Number 3 will remain in force until at least 6 a.m. on Sunday. The severe typhoon Koinu is relatively slow-moving and its circulation is rather compact.

At 5 pm today, Koinu was estimated to be about 170 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong and is forecasted to move west slowly across the coastal waters of Guangdong.

The HKO forecaster said Koinu will skirt within 150 kilometres south of the SAR on Saturday night and Sunday.

"Local wind direction will also change from northerlies to easterlies. Places which have been sheltered before will become more exposed to high winds. There may be occasional gale winds over some places of the southern part of the territory," said acting senior scientific officer Kong Yu-chau.

"Depending on the change in local wind strength by then, the Observatory will assess the need for issuance of higher tropical cyclone warning signals." it was added.

Transport Minister Lam Sai-hung said the Emergency Transport Co-ordination Centre is closely monitoring traffic conditions across Hong Kong.

The Education Bureau still maintained the earlier announcement that classes in kindergartens, schools for children with physical disabilities, and schools for children with intellectual disabilities were suspended.
