Hong Kong Observatory will issue Typhoon Signal 8 between noon and 2 pm on Sunday

Hong Kong Observatory reported on early Sunday morning that it would issue the No. 8 Gale or Storm Signal between noon and 2 pm, with Typhoon Koinu expected to come within 100 kilometres of Hong Kong.


Forecasters said in an update at 4.45 am that the storm was beginning to move faster as it edged closer to the Pearl River Estuary and its associated rainbands were starting to affect Hong Kong.


HKO forecaster said, "According to the latest weather situation Koinu will adopt a track closer to Hong Kong and skirt within about 100 kilometres to the south of the territory with typhoon strength later today".


"Gale winds are expected to affect many parts of Hong Kong." it was added. Heavy showers are expected today and tomorrow.


The public is advised to take note of the latest weather bulletin from the Observatory.
