Hong Kong paediatrician, Professor Patrick Ip who spoke on RTHK's Hong Kong on Monday morning (25th of September) programme calling upon parents of little children to arrange vaccination against flu for their kids.

The Professor who is in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Hong Kong said population's immunity against the virus has plummeted during the Covid-19 pandemic and the situation in Hong Kong is presently challenging as there had been two flu peaks this year after the relaxed of infection control measures.

"Perhaps as a results of all those infection control measures earlier, the immunity of our children and our population have been completely different. So now when we are returning to schools, we are actually facing quite a number of outbreaks," Prof. said.

The Professor stressed that the flu cases that have been seen in youngsters lately tended to be more serious.

"We probably realise that in the past, before Covid, usually when children got an influenza infection, it would be relatively mild and with symptoms for roughly around three to four days and most of those admissions to hospitals would only require a short stay, " he said.

"But during the post-Covid period, what we are facing is children with a little bit more severe influenza than before. Many of them need to stay in hospital for a much longer period, maybe up to one week, with more severe symptoms. Sometimes even more complications."

Ip said these complications were particularly worsen among children who had never been vaccinated, leaving them at risk of more severe complications like bronchitis, pneumonia or even encephalopathy affecting their brain.

He explained that the transmision of the influenza started through contact with the droplets, the sneezing and coughing from infected and even direct contacts. He advised that the infected children should be allowed to stay at home or use face mask always while having the flu symptoms. The toys and the classes should be disinfected regularly, he added.
