Hong Kong police have arrested four women in a crackdown on a prostitution ring that imported sex workers from mainland China to work in brothels in central Kowloon.
The four suspects, including a local woman and three tourists from the mainland, were captured Wednesday night when police raided three brothels in a building on Nathan Road in Mong Kok, police said Thursday.
"Preliminary investigations revealed that the 44-year-old Hong Kong woman was allegedly a core member of the criminal gang," the police said.
She was detained on suspicion of controlling prostitution of women and operating a sex establishment.
Police arrested the three mainlanders, all women aged between 25 and 42, for violating their conditions of stay.
In the operation, dubbed "Stempicker," police seized about HK$10,000 ($1,282) and items including condoms and bottles of massage oil.
The suspect remained in police custody as of Thursday morning. Mong Kok Special Forces personnel are following up the case.
In Hong Kong, keeping a prostitution establishment is punishable by up to 10 years in prison under the Crimes Ordinance.
