Hong Kong police arrested two men and a woman on suspicion of running a cannabis farm and seized nearly HK$20 million ($2.55 million) worth of illegal drugs in a two-day operation.

Police said on Sunday that officers last week raided two dens suspected of growing marijuana in industrial buildings on Sze Shan Street in Yau Tong and Ta Chuen Ping Street in Kwai Chung.

Kwai Tsing District Special Service Inspector Cheung Wing-shum said police confiscated 733 marijuana plants, three packets of marijuana and gardening tools during operations on Thursday and Friday.

The drugs have a market value of HK$19.9 million, she said.

Cheung added that two male suspects, aged 34 and 37, believed to be in charge of running the dens, were later arrested on suspicion of growing marijuana.

Both men, who are Vietnamese, held sponsorship forms and immigration documents that allow holders to stay in the city without work permit.

Cheung said a man had allegedly tried to escape despite repeated police warnings during his arrest and was charged with obstructing police enforcement. A third suspect, a 36-year-old woman who was also a tenant of the two units, was arrested.

Police are still investigating the relationship between the three.
