Hong Kong has reclaimed its position as Asia's top financial centre, surpassing Singapore for the first time since September 2022, according to the latest Global Financial Centres Index released on Tuesday.
In the global rankings, Hong Kong is now positioned third, following New York and London, while Singapore and San Francisco complete the top five. This ranking is based on an analysis of 121 cities conducted by the China Development Institute in Shenzhen, in collaboration with the London think tank Z/Yen Partners.
The shift in rankings comes after Hong Kong lost its top spot to Singapore in September 2022, coinciding with Singapore's easing of travel restrictions in April of that year. In contrast, Hong Kong maintained strict curbs until January 2023.
Factors contributing to Hong Kong's resurgence include a robust stock market and an increase in new listings, enhancing its reputation as a financial hub. Christopher Hui Ching-yu, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, highlighted the city’s strong performance across various sectors, including business environment, fintech, banking, and wealth management, during the 5th Belt and Road Initiative Tax Administration Cooperation Forum.
As the financial landscape continues to evolve, Hong Kong's reclaiming of the top spot underscores its resilience and strategic importance in the region.
