Hong Kong’s population has increased from an estimated 7,346,100 at the same time last year to 7,498,100 in mid-2023. The 2.1 per cent growth signifies a sharp difference from the 1.6 per cent mid last year, Census and Statistics Department released the figures on Tuesday
It was reported by the official that 174,000 people were added to the city's population in the last 12 months to the middle of this year. This includes 31,000 one-way permit holders from China compared to 18,300 the previous year.
The Government spokesperson said that this sharp increase was instigated mostly by the reopening of the border earlier this year after the ease of the Covid-19 anti-pandemic control measures. The usual travel level between Hong Kong to China and the rest of the world has continuously restarted.
Moreover, many Hong Kong residents who sojourned abroad because of the epidemic are back in Hong Kong, while some mainland and overseas persons have also been admitted to Hong Kong through various schemes.
The departments said that the city recorded 32,600 births and 54,600 deaths in the last 12 months.

政府發言人表示，這一急劇增加主要是由於今年早些時候Covid-19抗疫控制措施放鬆後重新開放邊境所致。 香港與中國及世界其他地區之間的往常旅行水平不斷重啟。
此外，許多因疫情而旅居海外的香港居民已返回香港，而一些內地和海外人士也已通過各種計劃入境香港。
