Hong Kong Star Ferry inflated the fares across 2-harbour routes

The 125-year-old Star Ferry Transport operating across the Hong Kong harbours which has been battling with a financial downturn to remain in operation has announced the

increment after the authority's approval. Although the increment was behind what the operator's management had bargained with the Exco. The decision-making body clarified that the decided fare tickets increase would give the company a chance to break even or earn a small profit in 1 or 2 years, according to the source.


From the 3rd of April, the adult travelling on the upper deck from Central to Tsim Sha Shui started to be paying HK$5.00 on weekdays, an increase from HK$3.20 while weekend travellers began to bear the cost of HK$6.50, an increase from HK$4.20, both 56 and 55 per cent increment respectively.



The children's fares are increased from HK$2.80 - HK$3.90 while the vulnerable such as the elderly and people with disabilities are seized from paying nothing to HK$2.00 concessionary rate as regulated under the Government's discounted public transport scheme.


The source said, "company which had experienced a shortage of patronage since the inception of Corona Virus pandemic coupled with increased costs of ferry operation attributed to the fares adjustment".
