The Center for Food Safety (CFS) of the Hong Kong Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced an immediate suspension of the import of poultry meat and products from specific regions in the United States.

This action is in response to a notification from the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) regarding an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in Meeker County, Minnesota, and Sanpete County, Utah.

The Center decided to suspend imports to protect public health in Hong Kong. The move follows established protocols to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and protect consumers from potential health risks associated with the avian influenza virus.

A spokesman for the center emphasized that the amount of poultry imported from the United States in the first half of this year was huge. According to data from the Census and Statistics Department, Hong Kong imported approximately 12,280 tons of chilled and frozen poultry meat and approximately 19.5 million poultry eggs from the United States during the same period.
