The National Immigration Administration on Friday announced that the mainland travel permits - return documents used by Hong Kong and Macau residents to travel to Mainland China that expired between the 1st of January 2020, and the 30th of December 2023 could still be used until the last day of this year. This is good news for Hongkongers whose fall in the category and have been struggling to renew their papers amid long waiting queues and time as a result of the surge in the level of application lately. The authority has said they can use their expired permits to cross the border from the 8th of May and also can decide to renew their documents at a nearby government office on Mainland.
The immigration authority said "Due to the breakout of Covid19 in 2020, some of the Hong Kong and Macau residents could not able to process their documents as there was long waiting for booking slots in some offices.
Chief Secretary Eric Chan Kwok-ki told reporters on a trip to Beijing on Friday that this kind of decision has never been made by the central government and shows helpful efforts towards Hongkongers and the interest to solve problems which residents are facing.
It has been reported that about 1.5 million people were still waiting for their applications to be processed.

移民局表示:“由於2020年爆發的Covid19,部分港澳居民無法處理他們的證件,因為一些辦公室的預訂時段等待時間過長。
布政司司長陳國基週五在北京訪問期間對記者說,中央政府從來沒有做出這樣的決定,顯示了對香港人的有益努力以及解決居民所面臨問題的興趣。
據報導,約有 150 萬人仍在等待他們的申請得到處理。
