Hundreds of residents showed up in the police recruitment exercise that took place on Sunday at the police college, Aberdeen after the entry requirements were compromised. The change in the admission policies influenced the number of Hongkongers to come out and try their luck.
The exercise was said to be the first large-scale police recruitment with some participants emphasising the change as the cause for joining the force. The force lowered the standard for prospective candidates in early May. This year as a result of the continued hiring slump, dropped its height, weight and vision threshold.
The Superintendent of the police recruitment division, Walter Chan Kit-Fung mentioned that he noted an “obvious rise” in applications after the entry standard was adjusted last month but also said the force still could not pledge it would achieve the goal of hiring 240 probationary inspectors and 1,350 constables this financial year.
The criteria for vision, height, weight and education are now lowered. Male candidates were originally required to be at least 163cm (5.3 feet) tall and weigh no less than 50kg (110lbs), while the mark for women was 152cm and 42kg. Candidates also had to pass an eyesight test without wearing glasses or contact lenses.
The application requirements in the past required candidates to have achieved at least level 2 or above in five subjects in the Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) papers. However, current candidates who failed their Chinese and English-language exams would be given an alternative test to write.
The force reported that the exercise included applicants doing various jobs as well as students from overseas and local institutions comprised of 1,563 participants. Some 490 applications were received on-site for various positions, including 81 for the probationary inspector, 341 for constable recruits, and 68 for auxiliary constables.
The starting salary for the most junior position in police as a constable is about HK$27,000 and for the inspector is HK$48,000.
It was said by the police that the requirement to recruit targeted officers has not been made for the past 3 years due to a drawback in the workforce and fewer secondary school graduates. Chan said on Sunday that those conditions are to be blamed.
