In the first two days of the long weekend on July 1, more than 1 million Hong Kong residents travelled out of the city, with 248,000 visitors arrived

Over one million Hong Kong residents exited the city on the first two days of the July 1 long weekend, according to the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

The reports from Immigration said there was a total number of 483,517 residents who made the trip out of the city on Sunday and a total of 553,511 residents on Saturday. The number was said to be second to the highest daily number of residents travelling out of the city since the removal of Covid-related travel restrictions.

Regarding to the records, the highest post-pandemic figure was marked on the 29th of March, this year's Good Friday when 700,808 residents travelled out of Hong Kong.

The records further revealed that among 1,037,028 residents who left Hong Kong last Saturday and Sunday, at least 89 per cent equivalent to 918,821 residents travelled to different places in mainland China by high-speed railway or by road while over 88,000 residents travelled by air on the same days.

However, the record showed that only 248,367 tourists from the mainland and other countries landed in Hong Kong on Saturday and Sunday which was noted to be only 3 per cent higher than last weekend.

The recent trend of more Hongkongers travelling to mainland China at weekends and holidays has been seen as a big challenge for local businesses. The retailers and restaurants in the city are complaining of the lower patronage.
