Jiaolong Submersible Docks in Hong Kong with Mothership

On September 25, 2024, the national research vessel Shenhai Yihao and the Jiaolong manned submersible docked at Ocean Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui, marking the first return of China's deep-ocean research ship to Hong Kong in 18 years.

Arriving around 7 AM via Sai Wan, the vessel was met with excitement from local students who were invited onboard, expressing pride in witnessing the nation’s advancements in technology. Deputy Chief Secretary for Administration Warner Cheuk Wing-hing*and Nancy Chu Ip Yuk-yu, president of the University of Science and Technology, were present to welcome the ship. Cheuk highlighted the significance of this visit, noting it showcases China's progress in deep-sea manned submersible technology and reflects the central government's support for Hong Kong's marine research and ecological conservation.

Cheuk encouraged the community to embrace this opportunity, hoping it inspires more young people in Hong Kong to engage in deep-sea research and participate in international science projects.

The Shenhai Yihao and Jiaolong recently returned from a 45-day international deep-sea metascience program in the western Pacific Ocean. They will be stationed at the Ocean Terminal for three days, during which the 11 scientific researchers onboard, including three from Hong Kong, are scheduled to attend lectures and international seminars.

Students like Cheng expressed eagerness to explore the vessel and learn about its discoveries during the expedition. Another student, So, shared a sense of pride in hosting such a prestigious Chinese research vessel, viewing it as a unique opportunity.

In conjunction with the Jiaolong's visit, the University of Science and Technology is organizing a series of academic and public outreach activities designed to enhance public understanding of marine scientific research and conservation. Lawmaker Duncan Chiu Tat-kun mentioned that visitors will have the chance to view the Jiaolong and various samples collected from depths between 2,000 and 4,000 meters.
