The Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR John Lee Kar- chiu updated today Wednesday on the latest number of people imported to the city through various talent schemes established by the government earlier this year.

Lee said in a speech at an innovation and technology summit that more than 70,000 people have moved to Hong Kong so far this year and the number is way beyond the target of having 35,000 people come to Hong Kong each year which completely signifies Hong Kong's strong international attraction and competitiveness in enticing talents from around the world.

He said authorities had received more than 180,000 applications for the various talent schemes this year, of which more than 110,000 were approved, including 70,000 who have already moved to Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, Lee noted that Hong Kong is an international financial, shipping, and trading centre, and is determined to become one of the major international innovation and technology centres in the region.

The chief executive also mentioned the plan announced last year to attract companies in the life sciences, artificial intelligence, and financial technology sectors.

He said further that in the past year, the plan has facilitated the establishment or expansion of 30 key companies in Hong Kong, with these companies to invest nearly US$4 billion and create 10,000 job positions.
