According to the local authority, an avalanche of searing gas clouds and lava flow of 1.5 km was observed on Saturday after the volcano located in Indonesia's Yogyakarta special region erupted around noon local time (0500 GMT).
Residents in the nearby community have been warned to stop any activities in the danger zones, which range between three to seven kilometres radius from the crater, the statement said.
Merapi is the most active of more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, a densely populated island of Javanese cultures. This is the biggest lava flow since authorities raised the alert level to the second-highest in November 2020, said Hanik Humaida, the head of Yogyakarta's Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center.
Indonesia, an archipelago of 270 million people, is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity because it sits along the "Ring of Fire. An eruption in December 2021 in Mount Semeru, the highest volcano on Java island, left 48 people dead, and 36 missing.
There were no immediate reports of casualties, the country's disaster mitigation agency said. At least eight villages near the volcano have been affected by volcanic ash, an officer at one of Merapi's observation posts said in a statement.
