Beginning January 8, residents of Hong Kong who wish to travel to the United Kingdom will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) prior to their journey. This new entry regulation affects individuals from 48 countries and regions, including Hong Kong, who must apply for the ETA before traveling or transiting through the UK.

The British government has implemented this regulation to ensure that authorities have access to personal information, biometric data, and contact details of visitors, thereby enhancing security measures. Notably, the regulation exempts only those with visas that permit them to reside, work, or study in the UK. All travelers, including infants and children, are required to apply for an ETA, even for simple transit.
The ETA will be valid for two years, allowing multiple entries into the UK, with a maximum stay of six months during its validity. The application fee is set at £10, and individuals can apply via an official mobile app or website, with the process expected to take around 10 minutes. Applicants will need to provide contact information, passport details, and a recent photograph.
Notification of approval will be sent via email within three working days, and the ETA will be linked to the applicant's passport.
